Cathy Freeman

Cathy Freeman’s role in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games cemented her name forever in Olympic history and in Australia’s national psyche as one of our all-time greats. Her role in the opening ceremony celebrated a century of woman’s participation in Olympic sports and the heritage of Indigenous Australians. Her win in the 400m final remains one of our greatest sporting moments. In April 2018, Freeman was awarded an Order of Merit by the Australian Olympic Committee. Since retiring from elite competition Freeman has been using her platform to invest in the future of Indigenous children through her charity the Cathy Freeman Foundation.
